KEEPING YOUR CAR OR VAN IN TIP-TOP CONDITION
An MOT test ensures that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. If your car is over 3 years old, it is essential that you get an MOT every year or on the third ‘birthday’ of its last MOT of its registration.
You could be fined up to £1000 for driving your vehicle without a valid MOT.
An MOT lasts for a year and the date it runs out is printed on the last pass certificate. You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. For example: if your MOT runs out on 15 January, the earliest you can get an MOT to keep the same renewal date for next year is 16 February. If you choose to get an earlier MOT your renewal date for the following year will be different.
In the UK if your MOT runs out, you cannot drive your vehicle on the road and you will be prosecuted if you are caught doing so. The only way you can drive when your MOT has expired is if you are driving your vehicle somewhere to be repaired or to a pre-arrange MOT test. The MOT in Northamptonshire testing price varies but the maximum amount that testing stations can charge for a car is: £54.85 and £29.65 for a standard motorcycle.
WHY YOUR CAR NEEDS AN MOT IN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE
The purpose of an MOT test is to check a car’s safety and roadworthiness. It was initially set up back in the 60’s and has since been a legal requirement. Without it, you will be unable to renew your road tax and invalidate your car insurance which can put you at risk for another 6-8 penalty points. This will invalidate any claims you may have.
An MOT test includes an in-depth examination of the internal and external of your car, although it is only a visual test, so an examiner is not allowed to remove anything on your car and this is why car servicing is necessary to keep your car in tip top condition.

WHAT DOES MOT IN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE TESTING INVOLVE?
If your vehicle is undergoing its first MOT then a V5C vehicle registration certificate is required, this document is also required if your vehicle has had a change of registration plate since its last MOT. The test is roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour and there are a multitude of inspections carried out.
The DVSA advise that some simple tests are carried out before their vehicle is looked at. Nearly half of faults found on MOTs could be avoided by carrying out simple maintenance so it is worthwhile checking things like; lights, wiper blades and tyres before your test so that your car has the best chance of passing the test first time.
Did you know?
- 30% of all MOT faults relate to lighting and signaling
- Before your test, it’s worth having someone walk around your vehicle to check each light while you operate then from the driver’s seat
Once the test is completed you will either receive a pass or fail with a corresponding certificate. Over 60% of vehicles pass every year and when this happens a driver is issued with an MOT certificate. The MOT certificate will show the mileage recorded at the current and previous 3 test passes. If you spot any mistakes on the certificate, then you will have 7 days to ask for a replacement certificate. In the event of a fail, you will will receive a fail certificate which will allow you to find out more about what your next steps are.
WHAT IF MY CAR FAILS?
As mentioned above, if your vehicle fails the MOT in Northampton then you will receive a refusal certificate and it will be recorded in the MOT database. If you have reason to believe the fail was incorrect then you can appeal the result.
Driving a vehicle that has failed
If your MOT certificate is still valid you can take your vehicle away but if the MOT has run out, you can take your vehicle to:
- Have the faults fixed.
- A pre-arranged MOT test appointment.
You will need to ensure your car is road worthy in both these cases or you can be fined.
